PTA Catalysis

 TPA is employed for the production of linear, saturated polyester resins, fibers and films by combination with glycols. The major worldwide consumption of TPA is aimed at the production of polyethylene terephthalate( PET ) polymer which is consumed in the production of polyester fibers, polyester film and solid-state (bottling grade ) resins.

The process using bromine as a reaction promoter was made commercially available by AMOCO and known as the Amoco process.
Variations of the Amoco process have been developed by several companies including ICI, Enichem, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Eastman and DuPont but all the above process developments are based on oxidation of p- xylene where bromine is used as a reaction promoter for TPA.
