Battery Industry

ZnBr2 batteries are one of the new generation options for use in load levelling and electrical/hybride vehicles. The electrolyte solution, in these batteries, is composed mainly of ZnBr2 and quartenary amines. This solution can be stored in an external storage tank and pumped into the electrochemical cells, when required, thus increasing the capacity of the battery. In the charging phase of the battery, Zinc cations are precipitated on one electode as metal, and on the other electrode bromine is produced and complexed immediately by the quartenary amine. In the discharching phase (power supply) the complexed bromine solution is pumped into the electrochemical cell where it reacts electrochemically with the zinc metal to supply energy.
